Destrehan relies on defense to knock off John Ehret

The Destrehan Wildcats (18-5) used a stellar defensive effort against John Ehret (14-6) to pick up a 49-37 victory last week.

Previously, the red-hot Wildcats were cooled somewhat after dropping two of their last three games. But against Ehret, everything seemed to click.

Destrehan jumped out to a 15-13 lead in the first quarter, using a 3-pointer by Ryan Derbes to set the tone. In the second, the Wildcats used that momentum to go on a 10-0 run that seemed to take the wind out of Ehret.

Derbes opened the period with another 3-pointer to stretch the Wildcat lead to 18-13, then Destrehan took advantage of Ehret turnovers to extend the lead to double figures at 25-13.

Ehret’s Elfrid Payton finally ended the Destrehan onslaught with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Wildcats started out hot again in the third, going on another 10-0 run that extended their lead to 36-18.

But just when it seemed like Destrehan had put Ehret away, the Patriots scored eight straight points to cut into the lead.

In the end though, Wildcat adjustments shut Ehret down in the fourth and the Wildcats were able to pick up the victory. Destrehan will open up district play on the road on Jan. 19 against Dutchtown.
