Destrehan knocks off St. Amant, East Ascension

The Destrehan Lady Cats are 2-0 in district after knocking off both East Ascension and St. Amant. The girls beat East Ascension 37-34, then pulled out a big 46-32 victory over St. Amant.

“It was extremely important for us to win our first district game over East Ascension because it set the tone for our motivation going into district play,” Destrehan head coach Angi Butler said. “With it being the first district home game, I was afraid the girls might let the crowd and the pressure of district distract them, but they played as a team and came out on top.”

Butler credited the victory to her team’s ability to step up and play sound, fundamental basketball.

“The girls were determined and focused going into that game,” she said. “They have truly come together as a team and are working hard every game to improve and out play our opponents.”

While it was important to get that first district win, moving to 2-0 was just as much of a challenge. Coming into the game, the Lady Cats second opponent, St. Amant, was 11-10 on the season with some big victories over Central and Hammond.

But Destrehan played solid defense all night long, taking advantage of turnovers for the 46-32 win.

“I told the girls before the game to focus on fundamentals and focus on their individual goals and that’s exactly what they did,” Butler said. “They started working hard from the first tip of the ball and finished strong…that’s what we need in order to be competitive.

Jordan Dabney was key to the Destrehan win, finishing with 16 points. Areion Banks added 12 and Kayla Smothers finished with 7 points.

“I am extremely proud of the progress we have made since Christmas, and we will continue to improve,” Butler said. “They have come so far over the past couple of months, but we must continue to improve, be dedicated and work hard as a team in order to make the playoffs.

“That’s our ultimate goal this season.”

Destrehan will return to action on Friday when they travel to rival Hahnville.

The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. and a packed gym is expected.
