Destrehan High loses to Jesuit, ends season 9-4

The boys had a great season and have great potential for next year, says Coach Mark Luquet

For most teams, to be able to come back from losing the district title and play in the quarterfinal game at Zephyr’s Stadium would be a Cinderella story.

But for the Destrehan Wildcats baseball team it was a bittersweet reality when they took the field against Jesuit Catholic under the bright lights of the stadium on Friday, May 11.

This is was their fifth time making it to the quarterfinals in six years, an accomplishment many have never achieved.

The support of the roaring fan section was in full swing when, promptly at 7 p.m., the national anthem was sung and the boys took the field to begin their quest in proceeding to the semis.

To start off the night, senior Kyle Shnowski took the mound to strike out two batters and sent the only hit running back to the dug out.

To lead off the line up for the Wildcats was outfielder, Joe Harrison, next outfielder Trey Watkins, and then all-star slugger and third basemen, Renny Weber.

Also big time hitters were Jules Roussel, who had two big hits in the 7th inning, and Hunter Tyree who stood out especially during the middle innings.

Then in the bottom of the first the Wildcats sent in one run to put them ahead for the first – and only time during the game.

Unfortunately, the night didn’t have a happy ending for the Wildcats when the Blue Jays swept the field with a 7-1 victory and the advancement in the play-offs.

Too many oopurtunities were left on the field that night for the Wildcats with many runners left on bases in the early innings.

But don’t feel sorry for these guys, the coaches and players are looking forward to another outstanding season and are hoping to take a run for district champions next year.

The Destrehan Wildcats ended the season with a 9-4 record and an outstanding pitching staff record.

“We played really well this year and since we are only losing three seniors and our pitching staff will mature, next season we will have great potential,” says Coach Luquet after interviewed on his feelings of his teams’ final results.
