Destrehan, Hahnville both advance after impressive victories

Destrehan will host Ruston, Tigers will host Barbe

Destrehan and Hahnville both advanced to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs after a pair of impressive victories. The Wildcats destroyed Terrebonne 44-0 as most expected, but the Tigers pulled off a huge upset by knocking off No. 9 Ouachita 42-25.

Destrehan 44                        Terrebonne 0

For the second time this season, the Destrehan Wildcats dropped more than 40 points on Terrebonne in their playoff win on Friday.

The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard run by Will Matthews and stretched the score to 14-0 in the first quarter. Quarterback Donovan Isom found John Williams on a 60-yard pass to set up the second score and Isom took it in two plays later with a 2-yard plunge up the middle.

Terrebonne drove deep into Destrehan territory early in the second quarter, but defensive lineman Matt Gunter recovered a fumble at the Destrehan 21 to stop the threat. Isom drove his team down the field after that, ending the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Matthews.

With a little more than a minute left before the half, Talvin Michael blocked a Terrebonne punt that bounced out of the end zone to put the Wildcats up 23-0. But Destrehan wasn’t done yet.

With just 28 seconds left in the second quarter, Isom connected with Kirk Merritt to give Destrehan a 30-0 halftime lead.

On their first series of the third, the Wildcats increased the score to 37-0 with a methodical drive. Isom threw a short pass to receiver Alfred Smith who turned it into a 38-yard gain. Matthews then gained 16 on the ground to the 8-yard line, and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Isom to score.

Destrehan’s final score came on a 13-yard touchdown catch by Smith.

The Wildcats will host No. 12 Ruston on Nov. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Hahnville 42              Ouachita Parish 25

Hahnville’s big win over South Lafourche to end the regular season seemed to energize the Tigers as they jumped on Ouachita early and held on down the stretch for a 42-25 win.

Quarterback Dylan Keller, who was injured for most of the season, provided the spark for his team in the first quarter. Keller gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 16-yard run that proved that Hahnville would have success on the ground against Ouachita.

Though Ouachita tied the score after a touchdown by Cameron Sims, Keller struck again, this time rushing for a 40-yard score to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead.

But Keller wasn’t the only one who dominated on the ground for the Tigers. Running back Lynn Simmons increased the Hahnville lead to 21-7 on a 6-yard score.

Simmons scored again a few minutes later on a 5-yard run to put the Tigers up 28-13 at the break.

Simmons put Ouachita away in the second half. In the third, he bulldozed his way through defenders for a 14-yard score. In the fourth, he iced the game with a dazzling 42-yard run.
