Destrehan cruises past Ehret, knocks off ESJ

Smothers leads charge with 40 points in two games

The Destrehan girls’ basketball team improved to 2-0 in district play after destroying John Ehret and holding back a late rally to knock off East St. John.

Against John Ehret, the Lady Wildcats put the game out of reach in the first quarter by taking a 20-1 lead. After a strong second quarter, Destrehan extended the lead to 40-17 and then put John Ehret down for good in the second half to win 67-35.

Kayla Smothers led the Lady Wildcats with 25 points after going 9-of-15 from the floor. She also led the squad with eight rebounds. Jordan Dabney finished with 12 points while Jasmine Morris had six points, six assists and four steals.

In their next district game, Destrehan fell behind early, but exploded on offense in the second quarter to clinch a 59-52 win over East St. John.

East St. John led 13-10 after the first quarter, but Destrehan took the lead for good after outscoring their opponent 24-13 in the second quarter. Morris led her team in scoring with 17 points, while Smothers finished with 15 points.

Destrehan will travel to face Higgins at 7:15 p.m. on Friday before a matchup with rival Hahnville on Wednesday, Jan. 23. That game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Destrehan.
