Destrehan beats Zachary, moves on to second round

Will face No. 4 Acadiana Thursday

Though four soccer teams from St. Charles Parish made the playoffs, the Destrehan Wildcats were the only team to advance past the first round with their 1-0 win over Zachary on Friday.

Destrehan earned the 13th seed in the playoffs after winning the District 7-5A championship. They also hosted their first playoff game in seven years when Zachary came to town.

Destrehan (24-3) was on the attack early against Zachary, taking several shots on goal in the first half. Wildcat senior Jacob Johnson, who had signed a scholarship with East Central Community College only two days before the game, gave his team the only goal they would need after an assist by fellow forward Kyler LaGrange.

The Destrehan defense took over in the second half, keeping the shutout in tact to preserve the 1-0 win.

The Wildcats will travel to Lafayette on Thursday to take on Acadiana at 6 p.m. in the second round. Acadiana is one of the top teams in the state and entered the playoffs as the fourth seed. They knocked off Covington 6-1 in the first round.

While Destrehan had success in the playoffs, three other teams from St. Charles Parish were shutout in the first round. The Destrehan girls, who were seeded 28th, lost to No. 5 Dominican, 8-0.

The No. 25 Hahnville girls lost to No. 8 Mandeville by a 3-0 score, while the Hahnville boys lost 5-0 to No. 10 Northshore.
