Destrehan beats Thibodaux, wins District 7-5A championship

Destrehan remains red hot — and the Wildcats can now call themselves District 7-5A champions. DHS defeated visiting Thibodaux Tuesday afternoon 8-2 to clinch the outright district championship (26-6-1, 11-1), scoring five runs over the first three innings to seize control for good.

Bryce Rochelle and Evan Keller each drove in two runs for Destrehan. Dane Simon went 1-for-3 and scored two runs while driving in another. Zachary Wild went 2-for-3, including a double, with two runs scored and an RBI, and Ethan West went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Brennan Cortez pitched five shutout innings en route to the victory. He allowed one hit and struck out six. TreQuan Gabriel came on in relief for two innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two.

Keller and Wild each drove in runs in the first inning to push Destrehan ahead 2-0. Dane Simon drove in another run in the second inning, then Peter Carmichael and Bryce Rochelle each drew bases loaded walks in the third inning to make it 5-0. Thibodaux could not cut the deficit to less than five the rest of the way.

After falling to Hahnville last week, Destrehan’s opportunity to clinch the district outright came when East St. John upset HHS a day later. Destrehan and Hahnville were tied in the loss column prior to that result.

DESTREHAN 13, LUTCHER 2—The Wildcats followed up their district-clinching win with a decisive win over Lutcher in five innings Wednesday.

Simon went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Cortez went 2-for-3 and Keller went 2-for-4, both with two runs scored. Gage Broussard drove in two runs while Wild and Nolan Lemoine each scored three.

Destrehan has gone 20-1-1 over its past 22 games.
