Birdie’s offering free lunch to top athletes

To the victors go the spoils … and that now includes a few free meals.

Birdie’s Food and Fuel is offering a free lunch to each of the four weekly recipients of the St. Charles Herald Guide’s Players of the Week throughout the 2015 football season.

Each week, two Destrehan High School and two Hahnville High School players earn the honor, which is awarded based on their performance on the field in each game.

Mike Nabut of Birdies said that the lunch giveaway was established in order to encourage participation in athletics.

“I have kids who participated in athletics in our parish since the age of four,” Nabut said. “I think it does wonders for them, from the way they look at their school to how they interact with their friends. It’s not just athletics, but any extra-curricular activity. It makes them well-rounded and you see them assert their personalities faster and gain confidence at a younger age.”

He added that he feels it makes sense to reward those who are selected.

“Being chosen as player of the week, that’s a big honor,” Nabut said. “If you’re one of the few selected, you make the newspaper and you get a little closer to your personal goals.

“I know how hard those guys work and it can be tough. So if they can come in and say, ‘I earned myself a shrimp po-boy,’ well, that sounds pretty good to me.”

Winning players can accept their free lunch by presenting the Player of the Week page and their student ID to the store manager. HHS players can redeem at Birdie’s Hahnville location, while DHS players may do so at Birdie’s newly established Destrehan location.
