Girls soccer teams prepare for annual tournament

Both Destrehan and Hahnville girls soccer teams are perfecting techniques and busy practicing for the annual Battle on the Bayou tournament which is set for Dec. 6 and 7 at the J.B. Martin/R.J. Vial Soccer Complex in Paradis. Eight teams are scheduled to play in the two-day competition including Central Lafourche, Cabrini, Beau Chene, Hahnville, Destrehan, St. Charles Catholic, Comeaux and Woodlawn.

HHS will match up against Beau Chene on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by a game with Cabrini at noon. On Sunday, the Lady Tigers will take on Central Lafourche at 9 a.m.

DHS takes the field against St. Charles Catholic on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a match up with Comeaux at 1:30 p.m. The Wildcats will take on Woodlawn on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

All preliminary games are 30-minute halves with a 5 minute halftime and no overtime. The final match, which takes the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday, includes 30-minute halves with a 10-minute halftime.

In the event of a tie at the end of regulation time, there will be one 10-minute golden goal overtime period. If a winner still can’t be determined, the winner(s) shall be decided by the taking of penalty kicks. The winner of brackets A and B advance to the finals.

The HHS Lady Tigers lost to Dominican on Nov. 18 in a non-district game, but pulled through on Nov. 20 to win 3-0 over Covington.

The strong defensive play of Leslie Jefferson, Kaleigh Eppling, Jenessa Duncan and Jessica Donnaud helped goal keeper Destiny Louviere to achieve her first shut out of the season.

Recent HHS game statistics include a non-district 5-0 win against E.D. White on Nov. 26. Goal scorers included Annie Kinler, 2, Ardin Robert, 1, Ashley Hartman, 1, and Courtney Speice, 1.

The Lady Tigers also shut out the South Terrebonne Gators 7-0 on Dec. 2. Goal scorers included Kinler, 3, Brandi Fabre, 2, Speice, 1, and Peyton Percle, 1. Top defenders included Duncan, Jefferson, Donnaud and Eppling.

The team’s overall record so far for the season is 3-1.

Admission to the Battle on the Bayou tournament is $5 a day or $8 for the weekend. Concessions will also be available for purchase.
