6 parish players honored on All-State team

Six players from St. Charles Parish received honorable mention accolades for the All-State teams in their respective classifications.

In Class 5A, Hahnville had three players receive honorable mention, including senior linebacker Gabe Taylor, senior running back Sergio Medina and junior kicker Craig Ford. Destrehan senior receiver Rickey Jefferson was also named an honorable mention selection.

In Class 3A, two local players who play for St. Charles Catholic received honorable mention. Those include senior defensive lineman Taylor Cochran, of St. Rose, and senior kicker Patrick Juneau, of Destrehan.

Medina, who was named the offensive MVP of District 8-5A, was moved from middle linebacker to running back when the Tigers entered district play. He responded by rushing for more than 1,000 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns in only seven games. Medina’s best performance on the year was against Destrehan, when he rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-44 overtime win.

‘There’s no question that the move we made with Sergio is the move that won the district for us,’ Hahnville head coach Lou Valdin said.

Taylor, who was named the defensive MVP for District 8-5A, has led Hahnville in tackles for the last two seasons. This year, he finished with more than 100 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, a number of sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception.

‘He is a very instinctive player and one of our most physical players. The thing is he just makes plays. He causes fumbles and recovers fumbles,’ Valdin said. Ford was perfect in extra points on the season, connecting on all 24. He also nailed 80 percent of his field goals with a long of 47 yards.

Jefferson returned to Destrehan for his senior season after missing most of his junior year to injury. He responded by catching 36 passes for 562 yards and scoring five touchdowns.
