2 parish stars named All-State

Destrehan, Hahnville place 24 on All-District team

Destrehan running back Will Matthews and Hahnville linebacker Dwaine Thomas were named to the Class 5A All-State team.

Matthews put together a phenomenal season for the Wildcats by rushing for 1,814 yards on 215 carries for an impressive 8.4 yards per carry. Matthews also caught seven passes for 65 yards and scored 26 touchdowns.

Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux had nothing but praise for his workhorse back, calling Matthews an unbelievable leader both on and off the field.

“He was a guy that got the team pumped up on the field and was an extremely hard worker,” Robicheaux said. “He always did everything we asked of him.”

Thomas wrecked opposing offenses all season, finishing the year with 131 total tackles and seven sacks. He also had 11 quarterback hurries, eight tackles for loss, an interception, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.

“He was a terrific locker room kid….to me that is equally important as on-the-field play,” Hahnville head coach Nick Saltaformaggio said. “He was physical, he was fast and he understood what we were doing on defense.

“He never let the fact that he was the best guy on the field stop him from working.”

In addition to Matthews and Thomas, the Tigers and Wildcats also had several players receive All-State honorable mention.

Those players include Hahnville defensive lineman Fred Brown, Destrehan receiver Kirk Merritt, Hahnville receiver Brandon Singleton, Destrehan offensive lineman Louis Kieffer, Destrehan defensive lineman Glen Logan, Destrehan linebacker Allen Pittman, Destrehan safety Brandon Scott and Hahnville running back Rickey Preston.

Twenty-four St. Charles Parish players were also named to the District 7-5A All-District team. To read more about those players and see their stats, pick up a copy of the Jan. 8 issue of the St. Charles Herald-Guide.
