School district names Students of the Year

Aidan Hidalgo, Olivia Julien, and Eleanor Zafirau were recently announced as St. Charles Parish Public Schools’ District Student of the Year winners.

Eleanor Zafirau of Ethel Schoeffner Elementary School, Olivia Julien of J.B. Martin Middle School, and Aidan Hidalgo of Hahnville High School were recently announced as St. Charles Parish Public Schools’ District Student of the Year winners at the Student of the Year Premier Event held on Dec. 1 at the Dr. Rodney R. Lafon Performing Arts Center.

The students will move on to compete in the regional contest in 2023. Each student was recognized with an acrylic movie poster plaque, and the parish level winners also received star awards.

To be selected as a student of the year, a student must earn a cumulative 3.1 grade point average and be in grade 5, 8, or 12. All students of the year must compile a portfolio, write a biographical sketch, and be interviewed by a Student Achievement Committee.

The three district winners were chosen from the pool of the district’s 12 students of the year – one being chosen from each school. Those winners include Aubrey Justice of R.J. Vial Elementary School, Griffin Kimmel of Lakewood Elementary School, Landon Lirette of Luling Elementary School, Greyson McGovern of Norco Elementary School, Isaac McTee of St. Rose Elementary School, Zafirau, Hidalgo, Emma Loper of Destrehan High School, Frank Harding of R.K. Smith Middle School, Julien Momin Mahmood of Albert Cammon Middle School, and Angelina Williams of Harry Hurst Middle School.

Zafirau

Zafirau has made her mark in the local theatre world this year by starring as the lead role in Annie, The Wizard of Oz, and Matilda.

Her extracurricular activities include but are not limited to loads of theatre work, dance classes, basketball, and vocal and acting lessons. She has volunteered time with local charitable organizations, and at school she is involved in the choir and 4-H. Zafirau is a talented theatre and music student.

Zafirau has been the recipient of many school awards and honors and is a fixture on the honor roll at Ethel Schoeffner.

Julien

Julien is the co-captain of the JB Martin cheer squad and has served in several community and extra-curricular leadership positions.

At school she has also been involved in the pep squad, choir, Beta Club, yearbook, and Bible study. Julien has a bevy of extra-curricular activities under her belt, including music camp and all-star basketball. She has also volunteered countless hours to non-profit organizations around St. Charles Parish.

Julien has won several school awards at all levels, including being named the Lakewood Student of the Year.

Hidalgo

Hidalgo has held several school and extra-curricular leadership positions, including serving as Mu Alpha Theta Jr. President. He is an active parishioner and youth leader at Holy Family Church of Luling, and is involved in many school-based activities and organizations.

He boasts a long list of school honors and recognitions, and has been involved in many sports teams and clubs.
