The news is out. Our neighbor, The Times Picayune, is planning to end its daily publication and go out on the streets and into the homes with print media only three days a week beginning sometime this fall. Instead of daily publication, the newspaper will make more use of the Internet in these modern times.
As a competitor and still an admirer of the T-P, we respect their decision and hope it plays well for them in continuing the enlightenment and benefits it has provided to the citizens of our area. It has certainly been a benefit to have them in print every day in Louisiana for some 175 years.
Certainly, television and the Internet have hurt the viability of print newspapers in dominating the field of providing news to the people. Nowadays, one can click on the TV and get some of the news of the day when it is being broadcast though it is not in as much detail as usually carried in the printed media. Or he can go to the Internet and search for the explicit information he seeks.
By putting more resources and concentration on using the Internet for its news distribution, the T-P will offer a bigger and more current dimension to its news distribution.
As a community newspaper, the St. Charles Herald-Guide has concentrated on serving a smaller population area. Such newspapers are not suffering the extreme competition facing the metropolitan media since much of the news on TV and the Internet is geared to bigger audiences.
The Herald-Guide is still attracting readers with news and advertising about our community and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. And we are putting it on the Internet also and plan to expand on it in the future. Plus we have diversified into a broader publishing company to provide other print media which go on the Internet, too.
We certainly thank the public and advertisers for the support they have provided us in the past and look forward to an even greater expansion to our services in print and over the Internet in the future.
And we wish the T-P well into its next generation of providing worldwide news to our area.
