It was a gala luncheon, to say the least, last Friday in Baton Rouge when Louisiana Press Association named St. Charles Herald-Guide as Newspaper of the Year in its category. Staff members present celebrated the achievement but, in the final analysis, the honor belongs to our readers. It is them who made the local community newspaper what it is.
We’re not bragging. In many of the contests, we lost out to others. Louisiana has an abundance of parish newspapers which inform and enlighten their readers about what is going on in their communities. They entertain them also, as well as tell them about the good buys available at area stores.
That is what a community newspaper is all about – – to serve the public in letting the people know what is going on. And that is what we at the Herald-Guide strive to do.
We give our opinions on the editorial page on certain matters of parish concern and welcome the opinions of others even though they may differ from our own. Our opinions are mainly delivered to stir the thought processes of others which may provide thoughtful analyses of the issues.
Our main purpose is to give a balanced report of the news about government, business and industry, social events, education and all other matters that are of importance to a community. In order to do that, we need the cooperation of the people who help us report that news.
And that is where you, our readers, have played an important part. Without your help in giving us the necessary information to carry out that objective, our job would be much more difficult.
