President Barack Obama’s order to take some 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve came at a very good time for his administration. It likely will reduce the price of gasoline at the pump just in time for election season.
In the long run, however, it will have to be replaced later at a higher price. But the election will then be long gone.
The President recently said that he wants oil production to be increased in the U. S. He should follow up on that statement by implementing already proven safety regulations and then opening the door to more production as needed here at home.
According to oil companies, there are still impediments in the way of production resulting from the moratorium after last year’s BP oil spill. Get rid of them, Mr. President. so they can make headway on your desire for more production as needed.
Playing politics is okay in a democracy to a certain extent, we suppose, but it should never be the major concern once one is in office. We need public officials who will look after the interest of the country and its citizens first before following through on brainstorms that will attract votes at election time.
And that should be the main concern of voters in November.
If international or local emergencies occur that would require more oil or gas for our needs, we will be more secure by providing it here at home. And it is plentiful, all the way from Louisiana to Alaska.
