Iraq needs our support

As time moves forward, it seems we are going backward to the times in the first half of the 1900s when we were faced with two world wars that brought more destruction than we had ever experienced.

Today, part of the world, the Middle East in particular, is deadly.  There seems to be no end to the violence existing in Iraq, Syria and nearby countries.

In the last two weeks, especially, Iraq has been subject to utter destruction from terrorists and other countries that believe the end is coming to that country’s present government. ISIS and other forces are trying to take over the country that Saddam Hussein led before the United States invaded and toppled his evil regime.

It is mainly a war between the Sunnis on the side of ISIS, which are the invaders, and the Shiites siding with the government that still controls the capitol of Baghdad. The Sunnis got the upper hand recently by gaining control of a large portion of northern and central sections of the country but, at last notice, the Shiites were still in control of the capitol.

The United States is siding with the Shiites in response to a request by the Iraqi government and has sent three warships into the Persian Gulf, which borders Iraq. One Iraqi general has claimed that Iraq has gained the initiative in recent days and Baghdad is now secure, which may be an exaggeration.

One of the bright turnarounds is the support neighboring Iran, which has not been friendly with the United States, has given us in our apparent defense of the Iraq government. And it is quite evident at this time that we are on the right side.

Some people oppose our efforts to take sides in foreign warfare, but we must recognize that this world is not as large and countries are not as separated as they used to be. We learned that in the two world wars of the 1900s when we had to defend ourselves across the seas in Europe, Pearl Harbor and Japan. It continued in the war against North Korea with the knowledge that it was part of the conspiracy at the time for communism to take over the world.

As the most powerful and one of the most respected countries, our decisions count. Since we are usually on the right side of things, it usually makes for a better world. With such credits on our side, we need to stand our guard and help other countries that mean well do the same.
