Many professional football players have a lot to be proud of in addition to what they do on the gridiron. They use their off time to promote charitable causes as we have seen right here in New Orleans, the home of the Saints.
St. Charles has its own charity-giving professional star in Ed Reed who played for Destrehan High School. He now is an all-pro safety for the Baltimore Ravens.
Reed recently announced that he will hold a golf tournament to benefit the Ed Reed Eye of the Hurricane Foundation on July 2.
Mission of the foundation is to encourage kindness and giving and provide volunteer hours, financial assistance and a system of support in areas of Louisiana, Florida and Maryland.
It serves youth, particularly the underprivileged, with opportunities that focus on schooling. High on its list is to encourage high educational standards, good sportsmanship and respect for one’s self and others amongst the community’s youth and, thereby, the community as a whole.
Among the activities the foundation will fund are a football camp at Destrehan High School, Christmas gifts for needy children in the New Orleans area, Thanksgiving baskets for the needy of the parish and a donation and scholarship for Destrehan High.
It also plans to build playgrounds in New Sarpy and Shrewsbury. Many other projects have already been completed.
The golf tournament will be held in conjunction with Valero Refinery of St. Charles.
It will take place at Belle Terre Country Club. Reed will have Reggie Wayne of the Indianapolis Colts and Bubba Franks of the Green Bay Packers as well as other professional stars on the scene at the golf tournament. It should be quite an event.

Many professional stars have provided leadership for charitable causes. Our Ed Reed should be praised for falling into that line-up.
