Salvador Anthony Portera Jr

Salvador Anthony Portera Jr., 85, of Harahan, LA, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. He was born on November 11, 1935 to the late Salvador and Marie Benedetto Portera.

Beloved husband of M. Doris (Tootsie) Kolwe Portera, father of Stephanie (Aaron) Jabes and Jeanette (Keith) Milby; brother of Mary Ann (Doug) Luke and Caradina Jumonville. Also survived by grandchildren Anthony and Andrew Milby; brother-in-law of the late Frank and Rita Kolwe, late Evelyn and Frank Giroir, late Marion Kolwe, late John “Jack” Kolwe, late Ronald and Joanne Kolwe, Anne and late George Spaulding, late Kathleen and William Shields, Jr., and many nieces and nephews. Sal was born and raised in Destrehan, LA. He graduated from Holy Cross High School, served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. He attended Delgado Jr. College where he received training and certification in enabling him to own and operate Jr’s Television Sales and Service in Destrehan for 41 years.  Sal was a longtime resident of Harahan, and was a parishioner of St. Rita Catholic Church for 58 years.  He was an active member of the St. Rita Usher Society, St. Rita Food Pantry, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Knights of Columbus, St. Rita DD Club, St. Rita Golf Tournament, and recipient of the St. Louis Medallion.  He belonged to the bowling league at Paradise/Colonial Lanes (Thursday night) and St. Charles Senior League (Monday) where he also served as president.

A service was held on Monday, August 2, 2021, at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, Louisiana 70001, from 10:00am until 12:00 pm. A Catholic Mass, officiated by Rev. Msgr. Frank Giroir, Jr. nephew of his wife, Doris Portera, was at 12:00 pm with interment in Garden of Memories Cemetery, St. Patrick Mausoleum.  For expressions of love and sympathy, please visit www.gardenofmemoriesmetairie.com.
