It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Janice Wagner Matherne, a cherished member of our community, who entered eternal rest on February 15, 2025. Janice was a beloved wife, mother, and friend whose life was a testament to grace, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those she loved.
Born February 22, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, Janice attended nursing school at Lutheran Hospital Nursing School, earning her R.N. degree in 1965. During nursing school, she met her future husband of 58 years and moved with him to southeast Louisiana, transitioning from an only child to part of a large family. She embraced the change with love.
Janice was predeceased by her parents, William F. and Emma Daily Wagner of Baltimore, Maryland and her mother and father in-law, Hilman “Buster” Matherne and Annette Babin Matherne. She is survived by her loving husband, Stephen J. Matherne, and her children, Robin Matherne LeJeune (Mark), Dean Patrick Matherne (Inger), and Mark Stephen Matherne (Rebecca). She affectionately referred to her children’s spouses as “In-Love” rather than “In-Law”. She was a proud grandmother to Hunter James LeJeune, Abby Grace Matherne, and Ella Grace Matherne. Janice instilled in her children and grandchildren, values of selflessness, kindness, and unconditional love.
Janice was one of the first School Nurses for St. Charles Parish Public Schools, and spent over 30 years serving as school nurse, most notably for Mimosa Park Elementary, A.A. Songy Elementary, and Lakewood Elementary schools. Her career was marked by her dedication, service, and kindness not only to her peers, but to the thousands of children she cared for over the years.
Janice had an unwavering faith in God and was very active in her congregation at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Over the decades she served in many different roles including Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Council Member. She will be remembered for delivering the Children’s Sermon on Sunday mornings, as children were always close to her heart.
Janice was deeply committed to her community, actively participating in the St. Charles Parish Community Choir and serving on the board of the St. Charles Council on Aging. Her commitment to service and her desire to have a positive impact were evident in everything she did. She was always ready to lend a helping hand or simply be a compassionate listener.
After retirement, she began to focus on fitness and healthy living. This was reflected in the connections and reputation she established through her consistent participation in gym activities.
Janice’s passing creates an irreplaceable loss, yet her legacy will endure in the memories of those who knew and cherished her. As we mourn, we also celebrate the beautiful life she led and the countless ways she made the world a better place. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time.
A celebration of Janice’s life will be held on February 22, 2025, at 10 am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 6700 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, LA. We invite all who knew and loved her to join us in honoring this remarkable woman who touched so many hearts.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 8:30 – 10:00 am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Burial to follow the service at St. Charles Cemetery, 1279 Paul Maillard Rd, Luling, LA.
As this would have been the day, we celebrated her 80th birthday, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, attendees bring a Birthday Card. Those that knew Janice knew she never missed an opportunity to send a card.
Janice, beloved Wife, Mom, Grandma, and Friend, you will be deeply missed. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts forever. May you rest in eternal peace as you are welcomed into God’s embrace.
