George Washington Bird

George Washington Bird, 92 of Luling, passed away on April 25, 2012, at the home his daughter in Matthews, N.C. after a brief illness.

George graduated from South Charleston High School in the class of 1938. He was a retiree of Union Carbide Corporation where he worked as a Construction Superintendent for many years. He was a long time active member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in South Charleston as well as Bible Center Church in Luling. He was a veteran of WW II with an honorable discharge. He was an Eagle Scout as well as a troop leader in South Charleston for many years. After retiring, George and his wife Anna Louise were members of Campers on Mission and did numerous volunteer projects on behalf of Campers on Mission.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington Bird and Fanny Agnes (Baker) Bird, as well has his sister Pauline Meeks.

He is survived by his wife Anna Louise Blackwell Bird, and his daughter Jenny Sue Bird Shackelford and son-in-law Russell Eugene Shackelford of Matthews, N.C. He has three grandchildren Seth Ryan Shackelford, Joel Eugene Shackelford, and Bethany Louise Shackelford Tarr and her husband Daniel Tarr and a great granddaughter, Mandi Louise Tarr. He is also survived by his brother-in-law James Meeks of South Charleston, W.V. and his family.

Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St Albans, W.V., followed by a service to Honor the Life of George, Saturday, April 28, 2012, in the Lower Chapel of the cemetery with Reverend Matt Patton of Spring Hill Baptist Church officiating.
