Woman says she shot husband to stop beating

A 53-year-old Destrehan woman who is charged with attempted murder after shooting her husband on New Year’s Eve told police she did so to stop her husband from hitting her, according to new details released in the case.

Robin Adams told police that her husband was taking medications that made him verbally and physically abusive towards her. On New Year’s Eve, Adams said that her husband began hitting her and throwing her around the kitchen.

During a two-minute break in the beating, Adams said that she went into her bedroom and grabbed a .32 caliber revolver from her dresser.

She returned to the kitchen and found her husband sitting at the table. According to Adams, her husband said, “Well, you’re gonna have to shoot me because I’m about to f*** you up.”

Adams responded by firing a shot into her husband’s chest. She claimed that she didn’t intend to kill her husband, but just wanted the abuse to stop.

The couple’s son arrived at the home shortly after the shooting and found his father covered in blood. The teenager told police that his mother was saying, “I can’t believe I shot him.”

The son told authorities that he wasn’t surprised that his mother shot his father because she has had to deal with “constant abusive actions.”

Though Adams said she shot her husband to stop him from hitting her, she was charged with second-degree attempted murder because she had an opportunity to flee the home but instead grabbed a gun.

Adams’ husband has not been charged with any crime.
