Woman dies in Killona accident

Police say driver ran stop sign

A car-truck wreck early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 75-year-old Killona woman, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The woman, Rosemarie Burke, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima southbound on LA 3141 and failed to stop for the stop sign where the road intersected with LA 3127, authorities said. The Nissan then headed into the path of a 1997 Ford pick-up driven by 35-year-old Elsa Cortez of Des Allemands.

The Ford struck the Nissan on the left side with its front bumper, causing severe damage. As a result of the crash, Burke suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Cortez suffered moderate injuries and was transported to St. Charles Parish Hospital.

According to the state police, it is not known whether either driver was impaired, though it is not suspected.
