Economical Supermarket in Hahnville, was burglarized in May by someone using sophisticated equipment with an extensive knowledge of alarm systems.

Major Sam Zinna, a spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said in a meeting July 10 . before a group of concerned senior citizens that the sheriff’s office fully intends to use every available resource to catch the burglars.

“We know our elderly in the community are vigilante and are watching, many of the seniors are at home and we ask anyone who has seen anything to come forward and turn the information into the Sheriff’s Office.” he said.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said deputies warned business owners to be alert after the burglaries began in late May, and detectives think the same people are responsible since the methods of entry were similar.

The thieves appear to be targeting mom and pop food stores.

The burglars came in through the roof of Cashio’s Food Villa in Destrehan on June 29, cutting through the 2 1/2-inch safe wall to get cash.

“Burglaries in the past have not fit this style,” Chief Deputy Joe Cardella said.

“If something seems out of place, trust your instincts and call the Sheriff’s Office.”
