Valero named among Forbes’ International Best Employers

A month after making Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies list, Valero Energy Corp. has been named on Forbes’ inaugural list of Best Employers.

“We, at Valero, are very well aware that the company is a top employer,” Taryn Rogers, company spokeswoman with Valero St. Charles and Meraux Refineries said of the Forbes recognition. “But it’s always nice when outside organizations recognize this, too.”

The company ranked 280th on its America’s Best Employers and 179th on its Global 2000 list, according to the magazine’s March 30 issue.

Forbes surveyed 20,000 workers of every type of company and asked them to rank their employer, and then named five others they believe are good places to work. Valero was one of only a few energy companies on the list.

Valero’s St. Charles Refinery employees, about 600 full-time workers, in Norco and its Meraux Refinery workers, about 280 full-time employees, were among those surveyed for the recognition.

“Our commitment to our employees is one of our core principles and that’s reflected in our commitment to safety, our very competitive pay and benefits, as well as our annual bonus,” Rogers said. “Most of all, Valero employees know they are the company’s most important asset.”

According to Forbes’ profile, the San Antonio, Texas-based company has 10,007 employees worldwide with $138 billion in sales. Established in 1980, the company makes and markets transportation fuels, other petrochemical products and power. It supplies fuel and products under Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon brands.

Last month, Valero made Fortune magazine’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies.

The company ranked fourth in the petroleum refining category, up one spot from last year’s list. Among U.S.-based companies, Valero ranked third as top independent refiner on the list, receiving its highest scores in the areas of innovation, social responsibility, quality of management and long-term investment. Valero was the only independent refining company, and one of only three U.S.-based refiners, named to the list.

The company’s past recognitions include being named to Forbes magazine’s list of America’s Reputable Companies last year, and its 2012 list of America’s Most Trustworthy Companies. Valero also made Fortune magazine’s 2013 World’s Most Admired Companies as one of three U.S.-based refiners named to the list.
