Trailers, ride catch fire at West Bank Bridge Park

Firefighters at the scene of the fire at Westbank Park in Luling.

Two travel trailers and a carnival ride were substantially damaged or destroyed by fire around 5:47 a.m. Tuesday at the West Bank Bridge Park.

Luling Fire Chief Craig Petit said the department, along with Hahnville and Paradis fire departments, responded to the blaze around 5:55 a.m. Tuesday in Luling.

Sheriff’s deputies observed the fire and called firefighters, who extinguished the blaze by 6:14 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

The carnival group is at the park preparing for the Rotary Club of St. Charles’ Alligator Festival being held Friday through Sunday.

Kelsey Pollock, spokeswoman for the Rotary Club of St. Charles, said the fire did not affect the festival.

Petit said the main trailer was unoccupied at the time of the fire and two people evacuated from the second trailer adjacent the burning trailer.

Two families were apparently affected by loss of the trailers.

“We had good response and good manpower,” Petit said.

Because there are not fire hydrants at the park, he said they shuttled in water by truck. The park was temporarily closed to put out the fire.

Petit said one trailer is apparently totaled with the second one and the ride substantially damaged.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. The Louisiana Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
