Texas thriller filming in Norco

Movie cameras will be rolling in Norco on May 28, June 1 and June 2 for the feature film “The Fields,” which stars Sam Worthington of “Avatar” fame.

The filming will force road closures in the 400 and 500 blocks of Goodhope and St. Charles streets for parts of those days.

In “The Fields,” Worthington, who had the central role in “Avatar,” plays a local Texas policeman who teams up with a cop from New York to investigate a series of unsolved murders, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Since 1971, 21 women and girls have been reported missing along the Interstate 45 corridor in Galveston County, Texas. The remains of 14 have been recovered from fields, parks and bodies of water, but seven remain missing, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

No one has been arrested for the crimes, and the movie will reportedly center around the unsolved murders.

In addition to Norco, a scene for the film was already shot in Bayou Gauche. Two weeks ago, Mr. Jim’s Market was turned into a 7-Eleven that one of the characters visits in the movie.

“This does benefit St. Charles Parish,” Corey Faucheux, the parish’s economic development director, said. “We’re seeking to capture as many production dollars as possible and when those production crews shoot here, they spend money on things such as renting property and equipment, catering and purchasing gas for their vehicles.”

Faucheux also cited a 2009 analysis of Louisiana’s motion picture industry that revealed that local municipalities collect approximately one-third of the total taxes paid by productions, with the state accounting for the remaining two-thirds.

Though the parish does want to recruit as many production crews as possible, Faucheux said they will only do so when it won’t disrupt the normal flow of business or affect the daily lives of residents.

“There have been occasions where studios wanted to shoot here, but it would have caused such a disruption that the negatives outweighed the positives,” he said. “We perform our own due diligence when evaluating which projects to support.”

“The Fields” is slated to be released in 2012 and is produced by Michael Mann and directed by his daughter, Ami Canaan Mann, according to the IMDB.

Michael Mann has been the driving force behind several blockbusters, including 2009’s “Public Enemies,” The Last of the Mohicans,” “The Insider,” and “Heat.”
