Teenager flees parish hospital and drowns in Ashton pond

A 17-year-old boy bolted through the double doors of the St. Charles Parish Hospital in a patient’s gown, ran until he reached the Ashton Plantation subdivision, jumped into a pond – and drowned.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office’s search-and-rescue team recovered the body of Ryshad J. Drake, of 274 East 14th St. of Edgard about two hours after he fled the hospital in just a gown and underwear.

“We got a call for assistance at 9:56 a.m. that a patient at the hospital had run out still wearing his hospital gown, and my deputies went to look for him,” Capt. Yoes, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office said

“The officers received reports from some people working in the Ashton subdivision that they had seen a male fitting Drake’s description running through a wooded area. They said he jumped into the holding pond and started to swim.”

The police report says Drake was spotted swimming half-way across the pond before he started having trouble and went under.

The coroner’s office pronounced Drake deceased at 11:36 a.m.

Pam Norfleet, public relations spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Hospital, said she couldn’t comment on the incident.
