Stylist cuts into competition by updating Luling salon

When Amanda Cameron of Des Allemands had her fill of working as a hair stylist on someone else’s clock and managing other people’s salons, she decided to take matters into her own hands and start a business.

Cameron, 27, opened Friendly Cuts in Luling’s St. Charles Plaza in 2003 with the help of her family and says that finding the perfect location was key in starting a business.

“When I finally decided to open my own salon it took me about two months before I found a spot,” said Cameron.
“But once I decided to open in St. Charles Plaza, it only took about a month for everything to fall into place.”

It’s been five years since Friendly Cuts’ doors opened and Cameron says that her business has truly evolved into a full-service salon.

“I originally started my business as a two-man show,” said Cameron. “Now I have four stylists, a barber, a manicurist, and tanning stations.”

Cameron says that in addition to the salon’s newest features like nails and tanning, her top services include coloring, cut, styling, perms, waxing and highlighting. She points out that she only uses Paul Mitchell products.

“I’ve got to admit that I didn’t always use Paul Mitchell products,” said Cameron. “But I’ve come to believe in the product’s  end results and use nothing else.”

Cameron’s top selling hair care products include Paul Mitchell’s Extra Body Foaming Mousse and the line’s Super Skinny product for frizzy or curly hair.

Cameron says that her business  showcases a fun, friendly environment that’s great for the entire family. She adds that running a business in St. Charles Parish is a great opportunity simply because of the people.

“The parish has grown so much and has a lot to offer,” said Cameron.

“It’s a great place to do business and I hope that my salon continues to grow with the parish and support it as much as it has supported me,” she said.

And Cameron adds that she will continue to add more services and products to her already full-scale menu.
