Students bring the world of Dr. Seuss to life tonight in Luling

Students rehearse in week leading to Seussical performance Thursday night in Luling.

The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant and many of their iconic friends take the stage tonight (June 18) in Luling, brought to life by several local and talented young actors and actresses.

The Spotlight Summer Intensive Theatre Camp will present Seussical KIDS, the culmination of a two-week musical theatre camp that began on June 8.

Tickets are $5. The show will take place at the Lafon Performing Arts Center and begins at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Seussical KIDS was created by Tony-winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime).  The audience travels with Horton the elephant from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus. When a child finds a red-and-white-striped hat, the mischievous Cats in the Hat whisk him into the colorful world of Dr. Seuss.

Horton must protect the Whos from a world of danger while also guarding an abandoned egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. He must embrace friendship, loyalty, family and community if he is to emerge successfully from the challenge. In the end, he hopes to prove even the smallest voices matter – no matter how much the world might doubt them.

The joyful and fast-paced show is geared for a family outing.

The Lafon theatre camp is annually open to rising 4th through 9th graders. Campers participate in daily classes focused on acting fundamentals, voice projection, stage presence, improvisation, singing and choreography.

Throughout the two weeks of preparation, students rehearse and prepare for a fully staged musical production, culminating in a live performance.
