St. Rose woman killed in hit-and-run accident

An automobile crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old St. Rose woman last week, while a Kenner man alleged to be responsible was arrested. Jensen Ray Sheets of St. Rose died of injuries suffered in the Jan. 29 accident, which took place at the intersection of Reverend Wilson Drive and Coleman Place in Kenner, that Kenner police believe involved a hit-and-run.

According to the Kenner Police Department, Osman Flores-Brito, 43, was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling southbound on the 300 block of Coleman Place in Kenner.  Flores-Brito allegedly did not halt for a posted stop sign, causing Sheets to try to avoid the crash by swerving her Chevrolet Tahoe. After swerving, the Tahoe was struck by Flores-Brito’s truck, causing the SUV to flip and partially eject Sheets and a 25-year-old female passenger.

After the crash, Flores-Brito didn’t stop at the site to identify himself or to aid the injured women, according to Kenner police spokesman Brian McGregor. He was later found and arrested at his residence of 211 Coleman Place.

Sheets was transported to a local hospital, where she passed away due to the injuries suffered in the crash. Her passenger was treated for minor injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, according to police.

Flores-Brito  is charged with negligent homicide, felony hit and run, negligent injuring, no driver’s license, no insurance (crash), and stop sign violation. Flores-Brito, who is in the United States from Honduras, was additionally booked on a detainer by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Impairment is not suspected by investigators as a factor.

He is being held on a bond of $155,000. There is no bond on the Immigration detainer.

Anyone who witnessed this crash or can provide added information is asked by the Kenner Police Department to contact Kenner Police Traffic Investigator Patrick Gallagher at (504) 712-2257.
