St. Rose woman charged with vehicular homicide

Family member turned in suspect after accident

A St. Rose woman has been arrested in connection with the alleged hit-and-run death of a LaPlace bicyclist around 11 p.m. last Thursday.

Darla Gauthreaux, 29, has been charged with vehicular homicide, DWI and felony hit-and-run, according to Louisiana State Police.

Gauthreaux was traveling westbound on La. 636-3 near Water Plant Road in a 2012 Nissan when she allegedly struck and killed Wellman Joseph, 55, in LaPlace.

Joseph was ejected from the bicycle and died at the scene, while Gauthreaux apparently fled the scene following the crash, according to State Police.

State Police say the St. John Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a family member at Gauthreaux’s home who informed them about the wreck.

Immediately following a State Police interview, Gauthreaux was arrested and charged. She was booked into St. John Parish jail and made $81,500 bond the same day, according to the arrest report.

Her court date is Tuesday, June 23, at the East Bank Courthouse Annex, 120 Cambridge Drive.

The accident remains under investigation.
