St. John man found dead in Bonnet Carré Spillway

Had been partying with friend, no foul play suspected

A man was found dead in the Bonnet Carré Spillway on Friday after a night of partying, but police do not suspect foul play.

David Scioneaux Jr., 30, and his friend, who are both from St. John Parish, ended up in the spillway after drinking at a local bar, according to Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“They fell asleep and when the friend woke up he saw [Scioneaux] sitting down next to a tree in a slumped over position,” LaGrange said. “He tried to wake him up and couldn’t, so he panicked and left the scene. It appears that he thought [Scioneaux] was in a deep sleep.”

After leaving, the friend went back to the bar and brought another friend with him to the spillway. When they arrived, they found Scioneaux in the same spot and were unable to wake him.

“At that point they contacted us at around 4:30 a.m.,” LaGrange said.

Paramedics pronounced Scioneaux dead at the scene.LaGrange said the Sheriff’s Office is awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. Scioneaux’s friend was not arrested for leaving the scene.

According to his obituary, Scioneaux was engaged to be married and had a son.
