St. Charles under tornado watch until 2 p.m.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for central St. Charles Parish until 2 p.m. today (Feb. 7).

St. Charles Parish Emergency Coordinator Eric Zammit advised residents should stay vigilant and watchful of potential severe, fast-moving thunderstorms today as a front moves through the area.

The heaviest line of storms appears to have passed over the area, but Zammit emphasized the area remains under a tornado watch indicating conditions are favorable to produce a tornado.

Rain is likely throughout the day with an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms and rain, according to the NWS.

This morning’s severe thunderstorm initiated a tornado alert, although Zammit said no tornado was spotted with the storm.

Sheriff’s deputies did report seeing dime-sized hail in the in the Luling-Destrehan area.

The NWS warns of taking precautions in the event of hail with people and animals taking shelter to avoid injury, as well as damage to roofs, siding, windows and vehicles is possible. Wind damage also is possible to roofs, siding and trees.
