Spillway Road closed

The Spillway Road in the Bonnet Carre Spillway is closed to traffic until further notice because of high water.

The road, which travels between Norco and Montz, was closed Monday after the river level at the spillway rose to 13.31 feet at the Carrollton gauge in New Orleans.

“Water is rushing under the road and it’s easy to tell that it will be rising in the coming days,” Parish spokeswoman Renee Simpson said. “As of now there are only a few spots where water covers the road, but it does not cover both lanes at this point. Public Works made the decision to close it Monday out of an abundance of caution, especially at night, since there are no lights in the spillway and hydroplaning is a very real threat with the amount of water that is on the road now.”

This is the second time in the past three months that the road has been closed. In early November, heavy rain in the Midwest sent water downstream, which caused the Mississippi River to rise.
