‘Scream’ MTV series will film in Hahnville

Don’t be terrified – yet.

MTV is lining up locations in St. Charles Parish to start filming the second season of its horror hit “Scream” series.

Mike and Becky Henderson say they’ve signed a contract for crews to shoot the exterior of their historic home near Homeplace Plantation in Hahnville. Shooting will be done sometime between February to July.

MTV teamed with producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein for the hit horror film franchise.  Spurred by a cyberbullying incident on YouTube that goes viral, a brutal murder rekindles haunting memories – and a murder – of a crime spree from the town of Lakewood’s past.

The movie “Scream” debuted in 1996  and was widely received growing into the latest flick of Scream 4 released in 2011. The TV series, which continues this movie franchise’s satire and humor, was renewed for a second season. The first season’s finale paid tribute to the film series’ director Wes Craven who died on Aug. 30 of last year.

Willa Fitzgerald plays the lead role as Emma Duvall.

Fitzgerald has had recurring roles on “Alpha House” and “Royal Pains.”

Becky Henderson said this isn’t the first time filmmakers have included the house in a film.

Scenes from the movie “Maggie,” featuring actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, were shot there, but with some changes.“When ‘Maggie’ came they wanted a house that looked like a house in a wheat field in Kansas,” she said. The crew also filmed scenes upstairs inside the house in a shoot that lasted 3-1/2 weeks.

When the film crew came for the movie, she said they knocked on the door and talked to her mother about going upstairs to look out the window so they could scout for potential filming locations. But, when they got up there, they decided to film some of the hall scenes in the house and also part of the garage.

Built around 1917, the Hendersons’ 100-year-old house was built on land that was once part of the plantation acreage. Becky recalled growing up in the historic house that she and husband now own.

“My grandfather built this house for him and my grandmother,” Becky said. “The house burned and he rebuilt it. He bought the two acres for this house from the plantation. All the plantation had this huge section of land, but over time different parts have been used for different things.”

Also known as the Keller Homestead, Homeplace Plantation is a National Historic Landmark on River Road.

The location also has been featured in several movies, including the “10 Cloverfield Lane” movie scheduled for release on March 11.
