Schools ask for input on upcoming schedule

Even though students have not even reached the halfway point of the current school year, the school board has already approved the proposed 2008-09 schedule, and they are inviting comments before it becomes official.

A committee composed of school officials, principals, teachers, parents and students prepared the calendar for board approval in accordance with the board’s policy and procedures manual. The executive staff and Superintendent Rodney Lafon then reviewed the proposed calendar, which has students beginning school on Aug. 13, 2008 and getting out for the summer on May 27, 2009.

Board members accepted the proposed calendar last week, and they are scheduled to adopt the calendar next month.

However, last year’s schedule drew complaints from parents who were left wondering why students get out of class on the Friday before Christmas, but didn’t return until Jan. 4. Since many families travel for the holidays, the move didn’t leave a lot of time for them to comfortably make their destinations.

But those complaints came too late, which set the stage for the board’s decision to invite public comments on the issue before it becomes official.

“Everyone needs to look at this calendar, because every year someone has a valid question,” school board member Stephen Crovetto said.

Next year, students will begin their Christmas holiday vacation on Monday, Dec. 22. They will then head back to school two weeks later on Jan. 2. While that may be the first big break, students will also have Nov. 4 off for Election Day.
