School calendar adds days, makes revisions to recoup lost class time

The elimination of two holiday off days and several early release days were among several revisions to the St. Charles Parish public school district’s school session calendar approved in an effort to address instructional time lost due to storm-related closures.

Modifications to the 2020-21 calendar were approved at a special meeting of the St. Charles Parish School Board on Nov. 4. According to the district, the changes were necessary to recover the loss of nine instructional days due to Hurricanes Laura, Marco, Sally, Delta and Zeta over the past several weeks.

The board announced the changes were necessary due to Carnegie credit requirements for high school students and semester instructional minutes, make-up days had to be added to the fall semester.

The changes include:

*The end of the third quarter for high schools will be Nov. 19 (previously Nov. 17).

*Nov. 23 and 24 will be student attendance days for all schools (previously off days for the Thanksgiving holidays)

*The end of the fall semester has been extended to Jan. 8.

*Jan. 15 and Feb. 5 have been eliminated as early release days for elementary and middle schools, and will now be full school days.

*Jan. 27, Feb. 10, March 3 and April 23 have been changed from early release days to full school days for high schools.

The changes were approved as quickly as possible, according to the board, in order to give families the chance to make whatever arrangements that might be necessary around the revisions.
