Rotary seeks young professionals to visit Argentina

Rotary club members are seeking professionals in St. Charles Parish to visit Argentina in April 2010 as part of the Group Study Exchange Program sponsored by the Rotary Foundation.

“Through the program, teams of young professionals from two different countries exchanges visits,” said Sharron Newton, team leader for the exchange. “For up to six weeks, team members experience the way of life, customs and vocational practices of another country, while sharing information about their home country.”

The purpose of the Group Study Exchange is to promote international understanding and goodwill through personal connection.

“While abroad, team members stay in Rotarians’ homes and have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts,” said Newton. “They also give presentations to rotary clubs and other groups about their home country.”

Newton also says that several professionals from St. Charles Parish have participated in past exchanges, including Sheriff Greg Champagne.

“Greg participated a few years back in our exchange with Brazil,” she said. “He traveled with us as a team leader and was able to see firsthand what law enforcement is like in South America.”

Rotary pays for round-trip airfare, and rotary club members in the host country provide meals, lodging and group travel in their district. Team members pay for personal and incidental expenses.

Young professionals  between the ages of 25 and 40 who are interested in applying should be employed full-time in a business or profession and have at least two years experience in their field.

Applicants must live or be employed within the boundaries of Rotary District 6840, but do not have to be a rotary member. Lineal descendants or spouses of rotarians are not eligible to apply.

“The focus of this year’s exchange is to study levees,” said Newton. “Although not limited to these persons, preference will be given to persons with engineering, geology or training experience.”
