Reserve man killed in apparent drive-by shooting on I-10

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide involving an apparent drive-by shooting Sunday (Feb. 17) near the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway.

At about 3:23 a.m., the parish 911 center received a call on a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 10 west bound.

The initial 911 call was passed on to the Louisiana State Police, Troop B, due to crashes on I-10 being handled by State Police. A short time later, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by State Police and informed the crash scene indicated a shooting and possible homicide. Deputies, crime scene technicians and detectives were immediately sent to the scene.

During the investigation, it was learned a 2006 Chrysler Sebring occupied by three subjects was traveling west bound on I-10 near mile marker 218 when it is believed to have been shot numerous times by another subject(s), according to the Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle crashed into the south side wall of the bridge where it came to a complete rest.

The vehicle’s driver, later identified as Lester Borne Jr., 26, of Reserve, La., was found deceased inside of the vehicle. Borne had apparent gunshot wounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy was scheduled for the morning of Feb. 18.

The vehicle’s two passengers were located walking on I-10. One passenger, a 24-year-old male, also of Reserve, suffered from a gunshot wound to his left foot. The second passenger, a 26-year-old male, also of Reserve, suffered from minor injuries believed to be associated with the vehicle crash. Both occupants were transported to a New Orleans area hospital where they were treated and released later in the day.

At this time, indications show the victims were passing through St. Charles Parish on I-10 when the incident occurred.

The Sebring also had what appeared to be a white or light colored recent paint transfer on the body, which could have been caused by a vehicle striking the vehicle during the incident or recently before the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for anyone that may have witnessed a vehicle crash involving the 2006 Chrysler Sebring and a white colored vehicle. Also, the Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who was traveling on I-10 west bound, near the incident location, around 3:23 a.m., contact the case detective.

Anyone with information, or anyone traveling in the area during the time of incident is asked to contact Detective Jenni Barrette of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985) 783-1135 or (985) 783-6807.
