Pornographic images on lost phone land Hahnville man in jail

Gets 5 years in prison with no chance for parole

It was a good deed that led to the arrest and conviction of James Zeringue Jr. of Hahnville.

Zeringue’s phone was found at his New Orleans work site, according to the St. Charles Parish District Attorney’s office. When the person who found it examined the phone’s contents to return it to its owner, he discovered pornographic images of children and reported it to police.

The 49-year-old, of 730 Sycamore St., has pleaded guilty to a charge of pornography involving juveniles. He will serve five years in prison.

Zeringue, arrested in February of last year after the images were found on his phone, will get credit for time served to date. But his sentence was not suspended and he will serve without benefit of parole. He was also fined $1,000 plus court costs, and he must register as a sex offender.

Zeringue changed his plea from not guilty to guilty as part of a plea bargain. His initial charge of video voyeurism was dismissed.

The case was investigated by the Louisiana Attorney General’s office before being prosecuted in St. Charles Parish.

Zeringue is serving his sentence at Nelson Coleman Correctional Facility.
