Police: Teens follow delivery truck to steal packages

Two teens are accused of following a delivery truck through Luling in order to steal packages from doorsteps.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said an alert resident in Willowdale saw one of the teens run up to a home, steal a package and then return to a red Buick. After receiving a 911 call about the theft, Champagne said deputies flooded the neighborhood and quickly arrested the Buick’s two occupants–17-year-old Wendell Downing Jr., of 255 Trailsway Drive in Hahnville, and a 14-year-old juvenile.

According to Champagne, the juvenile would run up to the homes and steal packages while Downing served as the getaway driver.

“They had apparently followed a delivery truck stealing several packages before we captured them,” Champagne said.

Investigators are now trying to determine whether the duo was also responsible for similar thefts that took place in December.

If anyone recently ordered a package that never arrived, Champagne said they can contact Det. Don Murray at (985) 783-1135.

After the arrests, Champagne said that residents need to constantly be on alert for thieves in order to help keep crime down in St. Charles Parish.

“Quick arrests on thieves greatly assists us in keeping overall crime down since this type of criminal is serial in nature and will steal usually over and over until they are caught, thus causing an increase in crime statistics,” Champagne said. “Quickly calling 911 with a good description will greatly enhance our ability to apprehend such criminals.”

Downing was booked with two counts of theft under $500 and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
