Police: Robber forces friend to serve as getaway driver

Man accused of robbing Destrehan Valero station

Dervol J. Zeno, 28, of 533 Fife St. in LaPlace, was arrested on Dec. 22 for reportedly robbing the Valero Corner Market in Destrehan and then forcing a friend to drive him home at gun point.

The incident began when Zeno asked his friend to stop at the store so that he could get a drink. While inside the corner market, Zeno pulled out a gun and forced the cashier to give him the money out of the register before fleeing, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange.
When Zeno returned to the car, he told his friend that he had “just done a caper.”

The friend began to argue with Zeno until Zeno forced his friend to drive him home at gun point, according to the police report. Once they reached the home, the argument turned into a physical fight over the robbery.

Zeno’s friend then called the Sheriff’s Office to report the robbery and Zeno as the culprit.

“I have read reports and seen incidents before where these types of things happen, where the person had no idea that the person they’re traveling with had committed a crime and they didn’t want to be a part of it so they end up contacting us,” LaGrange said. “These things happen from time to time, but it’s a rare occurrence.”

Zeno was charged with first degree robbery, aggravated kidnapping, simple battery, aggravated battery, simple criminal damage and aggravated assault.
