Police identify Destrehan woman who was stabbed to death

The woman found stabbed to death Wednesday morning in Destrehan has been identified as Mia Waite. Waite, 35, was discovered dead in her bathroom at 318 Madewood Drive at 9 a.m.

Waite’s mother, Carmelina Waite, was also injured in an attack at the home and is currently in the hospital being treated for stab wounds. She remains in critical condition.

The suspect in the murder, 34-year-old Bruce Bourgeois Jr., had spoken to his live-in girlfriend’s mother, Carmelina, earlier in the day and asked for a ride to his probation officer. He said that his girlfriend, Mia, was sick and couldn’t bring him, according to Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

When Carmelina arrived at the home Bourgeois and Mia shared, she asked to see her daughter but Bourgeois refused to let her do so, LaGrange said. Instead, Bourgeois allegedly attacked Carmelina, but she was eventually able to escape to a home across the street. Though her injuries were so severe that she was unable to speak, Carmelina handed the neighbor a note that said police needed to respond to 318 Madewood Drive.

When deputies arrived at the scene at 9:07 a.m. they found Mia dead in the bathroom from what appears to be multiple stab wounds.

Carmelina was rushed to the hospital.

Mia had a child with Bourgeois. LaGrange said the child was moved to a secure location.

Bourgeois was arrested in Independence Thursday night.
