Together, St. Charles Parish and the public school system collected nearly $79 million in sales tax in 2008, an increase of a little more than $5 million from the previous year. Officially, $78,792,342 was collected overall in 2008, with the parish getting $32,221,464 and the schools getting $46,570,878.
In 2007, $73,608,243 was collected.
The parish’s total from 2008 doubled the $16,328,444 that was collected in 2000, and since 2003, the parish’s total has increased every year except for 2007.
The school system collected its highest total in 2006 with $48,251,780. The number dropped by $4 million the next year, but crept up by $2.5 million in 2008.
