Parish closes Spillway Road due to high water

St. Charles Parish officials closed Spillway Road (St. Charles Parish Hwy. 12) Tuesday due to water over the road.

The road, which connects Norco and Montz, will remain closed to traffic until further notice. Traffic is being routed to Airline Highway.

All project boat launches and the St. Charles Recreation area will remain open for public use, according to parish officials.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also announced the ATV riding area on the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway was closed this morning due to high water on the trail system. ATV riding trails will remain closed until the high water entering the spillway from the Mississippi River overflow recedes later this spring.

The Corps’ Spillway Project Office will remain open to visitors for project information and public viewing of the spillway Structure.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest at 14 feet with some water spilling through the wooden slats of the spillway structure and covering the road. The river was at 13.4 feet on Wednesday at the Carrollton gauge in New Orleans, the Corps of Engineers’ indicator location for protective action.

Forecasters say the river will recede after cresting April 1. The flood stage at Carrollton is 17 feet.
