Online service offers free tutoring

Homework Louisiana, a free online service that helps people excel in their studies certainly points to the growing popularity of the future classroom.

“We love it,” said Lauren Camp Pitz, spokeswoman for the St. Charles Parish Library. “Lots of students are using it to great success. We are able to see the anonymous feedback that they’re leaving – and it’s always positive.”

Among those comments locally were “My tutor was very knowledgeable and helped me a great deal” and “I feel like I have my own personal teacher at home whenever I need him or her. I love Homework Louisiana.”

What’s not to love?

The service is free, online and available to all Louisiana residents through the State Library of Louisiana. Students in all grades, from elementary to college, can use the service to aid studies. Support is available in more than 20 subjects.

The parish library system has hosted Homework Louisiana more than six years and demand is growing.

Pitz said the service had more than 60,000 live one-to-one sessions with Louisiana students last year. Of that total, 1,000 parish students used the service.

“I like that the Homework Louisiana tutoring sessions are personalized to meet the needs of individual students, no matter what age or subject,” she said “It’s also great that students just need a computer, smartphone, or tablet with an internet connection – which they can get at the library – to get the help they need to succeed in school.”

Tutors help students find answers to their specific questions – they don’t just give students the answer, she said. Tutors and students use an online classroom to discuss the problems and work toward an answer.

“Students can also submit essays for proofreading, which we think is a great feature,” she said.

All of the tutors are highly qualified experts who have completed a thorough background check. Tutors are certified teachers, graduate school students, university students and professionals in their fields. They also keep up to date with the state’s curriculum, including Common Core.

Live tutors are available Sunday through Thursday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Skills Center Resource Library is available at all times.
