Officer assigned to crack down on child pornography

A Destrehan man, who allegedly downloaded several explicit videos involving children, was arrested last month after St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at his home.

Arrests like the one of 36-year-old Chad Fitts, of 309 River Point Dr., could become more common now that the Sheriff’s Office has an officer assigned to search out those that have downloaded or possess child pornography.

“It requires special training, but he was our IT guy first, so it’s not like this was something he was thrown into,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said. “He is very proficient at what he does.”

The evidence on Fitts was gathered by a task force headed by the attorney general’s office. The Sheriff’s Office’s child pornography investigator is a part of that task force.

“We needed someone because this is a crime that is growing,” Yoes said. “It’s the new playground and these people know that kids are online. They can go on there and pretend to be someone else.”
