New location brings new benefits for pharmacy customers

Destrehan Discount Pharmacy can be found in a different, brand new building these days, but owner B.J. Burkenstock says the store’s goals are exactly the same: to provide the same commitment to customer service that has been its backbone for the past 50 years. “It’s not the same space, but it’s the same old feel,” he said.

The new store opened on March 6, and it isn’t far from the old one, not even 200 yards away from its former location at 3001 Ormond Blvd. The new building stands at 12627 Airline Hwy. next to PJ’s Coffee.

The new location brings a more spacious building (it covers over 1,000 extra square feet) that now includes a drive-thru area. There is also much more parking space for Destrehan Discount Pharmacy (DDP) customers, with a larger lot that isn’t sharing space with other businesses as the old building had.

“Our patients have complained about the lack of adequate parking. But this is our building and our parking lot, so we shouldn’t have people parking for other businesses in that lot,” pharmacy manager Steven Faucheaux said.

Burkenstock said business has picked up already.

“It’s going really well,” Burkenstock said. “Everyone that’s come in has said they love the store, love the space, love the drive thru … it’s been nothing but positive feedback. It’s been a long time coming. This project took awhile to finish, but it’s here and it’s really a big relief to have it done. It really feels good to be in our new space.”

Burkenstock said the store is seeing more in-store customer traffic as well as a healthy amount of others utilizing the drive-thru area.

He added the additional space gives the pharmacy the opportunity to carry more products and fill prescriptions faster for the customer.

“It adds up to an all-around better experience for the customer,” Faucheaux said. “We feel like we’re about two or three weeks away from being completely settled into our new building … we’re still perfecting some things, putting the last five percent or so of this move in place, and the end result should have our customer service even better than before.”

While the store is currently open, Burkenstock said the store will likely have an official grand opening event sometime in April.

With the move comes a new set of store hours. The pharmacy will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day—open an hour later than it was previously—and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Faucheaux also added while the store expands what DDP can offer its longtime customers, that of course, new customers are just as welcome.

“Anyone who wants to  make a change, it’s very easy,” Faucheaux said. “A lot of customers are intimidated about transferring, but if you want to give us an opportunity, you can literally just call us, say ‘this is my name, I want you guys to transfer my prescriptions over.’ And we do all the work.”
