President hopefuls release campaign contributions
While most residents are pinching pennies as they prepare for the upcoming holiday season, the three candidates for parish president are gathering, and spending, money at an astonishing rate in their bid to attain the highest governmental post in the parish.
And all three are going about collecting that cash in different ways.
Both Clayton “Snookie” Faucheux and V.J. St. Pierre have raised more than $100,000, due to a combination of contributions and their own personal finances. Meanwhile, Chris Tregre has raised only $18,500 in the most recent reporting period, which pales to the amount that each of his competitors have gathered.
And while Tregre may have raised significantly less in his campaign to this point, the affect it will actually have on the final results is yet to be determined.
How much have they raised?
From Oct. 1 2006 to Sept. 30 2007, St. Pierre has received $121,712 from contributions. That total includes $3,842.74 in in-kind contributions, which is when a person or company donates supplies or services. However, it does not include the $895 St. Pierre received from deposit refunds, or the $7,500 that comes from his own pocket. Also not added to that total is the $53,850 St. Pierre raised by selling tickets to fundraising events and the $400 he got from a political action committee.
Unlike St. Pierre, Faucheux has not received any in-kind contributions, but he still managed to rack up $128,859 from Jan. 1 to Sept. 20 thanks to good old fashioned personal contributions. Faucheux also dipped into his own pocket by taking out a loan for $40,500, which gives him a total of $169,359 for his campaign during that period.
While both St. Pierre and Faucheux have seen the contributions roll in, Tregre started the funding period on April 23 with $846.11. He then stretched that mark to $18,500 as of Sept. 10. Tregre’s amount is entirely built up from personal contributions.
Who are the major contributors?
While exactly how much the candidates have raised is always a hot-topic, a more important issue is just who is contributing to their campaigns.
Like all the candidates, a majority of St. Pierre’s contributions have come from businesses. Amid Landfill LLC, Amid/Metro Partnership LLC, Harvey Canal Holdings LLC, Cox Communications Inc., Almerico Law, Durr Heavy Construction LLC, Lamar Contractors Inc., River Parish Disposal Inc., and Westbank Blues LLC have each contributed $2,500 to St. Pierre’s campaign. A.M.E. Facility Services Inc. has given $2,450, while Herman Weston has pledged $2,500 and Erick St. Amant has paid $2,000.
Faucheux has also received money from his fair share of businesses. Aztek Realty Inc., D & O Contractors Inc., Parson & Sanderson Inc, ETEC, Allen & LeBlanc LLC, PSI Political Action Committee, Coastal Waste Service, Dangle & Gesoc, Metro Engr. Inc., Cypress Ventures LLC, Lamar Contractors, Big Jay LLC, Bio Construction, Inside Outside LLC, Trinity SPA LLC, Hienz & Macaluso LLC, Vics Truck Service Inc., Ernst, Hienz, & Macaluso LLC, Consumer Loan Service LLC, Gulf States Contractors LLC, Urban Systems, and Business Resources Consultants have all given $2,500.
Several of Faucheux’s contributions have also come from citizens. Mike Patorno, Evans Graves, Richard Ormond, Jr., Barbara Stelly, Leo F. Crosse, Joseph Fantana, Jr., Arthur Arnold, Jr., Paul Ola, Jeff Poplin, Paul Murray III, and Joseph Stelly all contributed $2,500.
Tregre also has some big individual donors, with Kenneth G. Toups, Martha Toups, and Elliot H. Crochet each contributing $2,500. Cajun Crane Co. and Bayou Fleet also added $2,500, while Hickory Avenue LLC has given $1,500.
How much are they spending?
According to his most recent report, Tregre has spent $10,874.57 of the $18,500 he raised from April 23 to Sept. 10. A majority of that money, $3,484.95, was spent on campaign mailouts. $844.75 went to Web Printz for campaign signs, while $995.92 went into advertising.
St. Pierre, on the other hand, spent $91,348.03 in a little less than a year on his campaign. A majority of that, $32,907.95, went to Hyp Inc. for advertising materials. These included Christmas cards, brochures, banners, signs, TV production, and TV advertising.
Though St. Pierre may have spent a lot throughout the previous year, Faucheux easily topped the other candidates in terms of expenditures by using $141,203.36 of his campaign finances from Jan. 1 to Sept. 20. Faucheux’s money was spread out pretty evenly, with several of his purchases being made in the form of donations. His expenses also included $3,250 to Vince Vance for the first annual free concert in the park and $4,981.56 to 90 West for a campaign function. However, his biggest expense was the $30,000 he paid to Lester Duhe Consulting to produce a commercial.
