Told suspicious ex that he got money from angels, according to court documents
A 36-year-old Paradis man pled guilty to four counts of simple burglary after police say he broke into bars to steal money from video poker machines. According to court documents, when Steven A. Brumley was asked about the money by his ex-girlfriend, he said that it had been given to him by angels.
Brumley was sentenced to 12 years in prison and was placed on five years of probation after his guilty plea.He was identified after St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne posted surveillance video from one of the crime scenes. A picture from the video showed a man wearing a black hoodie with a black cloth over the lower portion of his face breaking into a video poker machine.
Shortly after authorities released the photo, they received a call implicating Brumley in the crime. According to court documents, Brumley’s ex-girlfriend was able to identify him in the surveillance video because he was wearing a hoodie she bought for him before they broke up.
The woman told police she was already suspicious of Brumley because his mother had called and asked if she had given Brumley money. According to the ex-girflriend, Brumley’s mother said her son had loads of money and she was wondering why someone would give a “drug abuser” that money.
When the ex questioned Brumley about the money, he allegedly told her it was delivered by angels.
Authorities would not release how much money Brumley made off with during the crimes, but he was charged with stealing at least $3,000.
Capt. Pat Yoes, a spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, said that Brumley broke into the businesses about two hours after they closed and jimmied open the video poker machines by using a crowbar.
“He targeted the poker machines as a quick way to make cash,” he said.
Yoes said that Brumley fought back against police during his arrest last November and was sent to St. Charles Parish Hospital after sustaining injuries in the melee. At the hospital, Brumley broke a hospital bed and attempted to escape, but he was quickly tracked down by deputies.
